2008 International 8M World Championship Chopard: Competitor info – Issue I

(PDF download)

Dear participants in the 2008 International 8M World Championship Chopard,

Enclosed you will find the first issue of our document “Competitor Info”, which contains important information regarding several practical matters for the championship this summer. Please read carefully and distribute to your yacht’s crew. A more detailed version will be available at a later time, probably in the end of May.

Our Shore Manager, Mr. Erich Kuhle, kindly asks you to answer these questions as soon as you know the answers (I strongly recommend that you read the attached document before answering):
1) Is your yacht arriving at Hankø/Fredrikstad loaded on a trailer
or on its own keel?
2) If your yacht is coming on a trailer: does it have a single centre lifting hook?
3) Is your yacht equipped with an engine?
4) Are you bringing an extra yacht to Hankø to live in during the championship?
The attached document lists several options for mooring of yachts that are not competing in the championship, but we find it easiest to make a coordinated reservation for all the teams. Please provide us with the yacht's length, width, draft, arrival and departure dates.
Mr. Kuhle’s email is erich.kuhle@vikenfiber.no, and his phone number is +47 413 14 492. Mr. Kuhle can be contacted for all questions regarding transportation, launching, hauling, mooring and storage. Be aware that the next issue of the Competitor Info anyway will contain more details on this.
We remind you that there must be a crew present in Fredrikstad when the launching of the yachts take place Wednesday 2nd July or Thursday 3rd July.
Always keep an eye on our website (http://www.kns.no/Engelsk/Race/8mR_World_Championship/) for updates the coming weeks!
The race organizers in KNS wish you a pleasant time preparing for the championship! Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Best regards,
Ivar Gilså
Information Manager

Gaston SCHMALZ ( † April 1. 2008)

It is with sadness that we have to inform you that yesterday, our friend and honoury life member Gaston Schmalz has passed away. For over 50 years he sailed his beloved 8-Metre France from the port of Cannes, usually around 11:00 you could see the graceful blue hull leave the port for a sail round the bay of Cannes. His love for the sport and openness made him introduce more young sailors to the 8-Metre Class then any other man did in Europe.  It was Gaston who with his Gaulois initiated a series of 5 modern 8-Metres in 1983 and again, in 2001 at the age of 82, he commissioned another modern 8-Metre, Fleur de Lys, from his good friend Jacques Fauroux. Fleur went on to win the 8-Metre World Cup in 2002 and 2003.  Having served as secretary and vice president of IEMA and having shipped his boats to 15 World Championships on both sides of the Atlantic, Gaston was elected honoury life member as well as member of the 8-Metre Hall of Fame.

With Gaston, our class has lost a true gentleman, an outstanding sportsman and a friend who was an example to us all.
