Classic Yacht Symposium 2026 in Helsinki Highlights Momentum for the International 8 Metre Class

The 13th edition of the Classic Yacht Symposium, held in Helsinki, once again brought together key figures, enthusiasts, and stakeholders from across the classic yachting world. For the International Eight Metre Class, the 2026 symposium was particularly noteworthy, showcasing both the strength of its heritage and the energy of a new generation shaping its future.

Nordic Singoalla Prize Honors Joakim Håkans

A central moment of the symposium was the awarding of the prestigious Nordic Singoalla Prize to Joakim Håkans, recognizing his exceptional contribution to classic yachting.

Through his leadership of Alfons Håkans Oy Ab, Håkans has played a pivotal role in the revival of the historic Åbo Båtvarf, now widely known as Ruissalon telakka. Once the largest boatyard in the Nordics, the site had fallen into disrepair after its closure in 1954. Since securing a long-term lease in 2013, Håkans has overseen a remarkable transformation.

Today, Ruissalon telakka stands as a thriving hub for classic yachting. Its restored buildings house workshops, event spaces, and restaurants, while the modernized marina supports a wide range of classic yachts, including 5.5mR, 6mR, and 8 Metre boats. The yard has become particularly significant for the Eight Metre community, offering essential infrastructure for maintenance, logistics, and regatta hosting.

This was underscored in 2025, when Ruissalo successfully hosted the International 8 Metre World Championships, firmly establishing itself as one of the premier venues for the class globally.

Equally important is the yard’s commitment to the future. A youth initiative launched in 2019 has introduced a new generation to classic sailing and boatbuilding, with notably strong female participation. This program has already contributed to a more diverse and active racing fleet, aligning closely with the evolving identity of the Eight Metre class.

Håkans’ unique background as both a maritime executive and an experienced captain has clearly shaped his vision. His work not only preserves a historic site but actively strengthens the ecosystem that allows classic yachting to thrive.

Sailingl8dies Inspire with Groundbreaking Campaign

Balancing this celebration of heritage was a powerful example of renewal within the class. The all-female Finnish 8 Metre team Sailingl8dies took the stage to share the story of their remarkable 2025 World Championship campaign.

Under the leadership of Selma Valjus and Martta Soini, the team assembled on short notice ahead of the Worlds and went on to outperform much of the fleet. Competing aboard the iconic 8mR yacht If, they demonstrated not only skill and determination but also the accessibility of the class to new and ambitious teams.

At the helm was Viivi Moisio, bringing experience from both 6mR racing and international campaigns. The crew further included Kaisla Jacoby, Niki Blässar, Emma Seppä, and Anna Aulanko—each contributing a wealth of experience from Olympic pathways, offshore racing, and classic yacht competition.

Their presentation, aptly titled “How to jump onboard an Eight Metre on short notice just before the Worlds and beat most of the fleet,” resonated strongly with the audience. It highlighted not only their competitive success but also the openness of the Eight Metre class to new entrants, innovative team structures, and fresh perspectives.

A Class Bridging Tradition and Renewal

Together, these two moments captured the essence of the International Eight Metre Class today. On one hand, the restoration of historic infrastructure and recognition of long-term contributors ensure that the legacy of the class remains intact and celebrated. On the other, initiatives like the Sailingl8dies campaign demonstrate that the class continues to evolve, welcoming new talent and redefining its future.

The Classic Yacht Symposium 2026 served as a powerful reminder that the strength of the Eight Metre community lies in this balance—honoring its rich past while actively embracing the next generation of sailors.
